SALZBURG...the cozy city

While spending my holidays in Munich, Germany, I thought of visiting an Austrian city that is quite close. The city, whose name means "the castle of Salt", is no other than Salzburg.

So I take the train and travel from Munich to Salzburg in about 2 hours. The journey is pleasant and the train is comfortable and clean. Even though I cross the German-Austrian border I don't feel like I'm in a completely different country, since these two countries are quite similar. Arriving at the Salzburg train station I'm a bit disappointed because the view is nothing special, compared to other train stations I've been to before. I leave the station behind and stand in the middle of a very large square.

I get on the bus and head to the old town. The Salzach River divides the town into two, the old and the new. The new town is just an ordinary quiet European town. I don't see anything special here, except of course the residence of my beloved composer Mozart.

I cross the bridge over the river and in a few minutes I'm in the old town and voila! Another Mozart house, the house where he was born. It's the first thing I want to see here. I take out a ticket and the tour begins.  I am so excited and I walk fast to get inside. I go into the room he had when he was a baby, into his entire house, I see his toys, his books, and even some of the pianos and harpsichords (clavencin) he had when he was a child. I feel so much shiver and thrill that I can't believe my eyes.

I get out of his residence and I start my walk in the old town. Small old and modern pubs, patisseries, and restaurants are everywhere in the crowded pedestrian area Here every visitor must try the famous sweet "Sachertorte" (a slightly moist chocolate cake with jam). Absolutely delicious! Αlong with the "Sachertorte", I recommend also drinking a hot Viennese chocolate. An absolute must!

After I've eaten and drunk it's time to burn calories. The best way is to hike, and even to the point with the best view, at Kapuchinenberg where you can see the whole town. The climb is a bit tiring but the view is really worth it!

I cross the bridge again and in a few minutes, I am at the Mirabell Palace and its gardens. A dreamy place, very popular for weddings nowadays and of course a beautiful place for a walk with wonderful gardens and amazing fragrant flowers. Reading some tourist brochures I also see that the first king of Greece Otto was born here and of course, it was one of the residences of the famous princess Sissi.

Unfortunately, it is time to catch the last train to Munich, where my hotel is located. No matter how many years pass, the taste of chocolate, the smell of flowers, the sound of the river, and Mozart's music will always be in my heart. Farewell Salzburg!.
